J. David Mahoney, President and CEO of AWESCO, addressed the media on September 16, 2009 at the opening of a Salvation Army 1927 time capsule at the organization's former headquarters at 22 Clinton Avenue and now home to The Hollywood Brown Derby.
"AWESCO has been in Albany for 69 years, and we have seen the need in this community," he said. "We want to join The Salvation Army in helping to ease the burden on those less fortunate in our community by serving as a Platinum Sponsor for this 125 year anniversary. We wish to thank our employees and our customers for making this possible. Our donation will support the Learning Zone programs that give youth and families the opportunity to learn and empower themselves to overcome the obstacles they face."
Capital District Physicians' Health Plan, Inc. matched the sponsorship, helping The Salvation Army's Albany Area Services raise approximately $20,000 to offset program costs, noted Felix Perez, director of development.
"The Mallozzi family generously hosted the event at The Hollywood Brown Derby along with the Honorable Mayor Gerald Jennings," he said. "BCI Construction Services donated the work for the time capsule opening and reinternment ceremonies. Zone 5 donated beautiful poster boards highlighting all of the local Salvation Army programs along with showing the costs it takes to provide each one. The evening was highlighted by presentations at each 'program kettle' by youth that are currently in that specific program."
The Times Union's September 30th edition reported: "FINDING A PLACE IN TIME" showcases some of the contents unveiled at the opening. The time capsule was placed back along with some great new items from City Hall, Hollywood Brown Derby and Salvation Army Albany. It will be opened again in another 100 years.
