COHOES -- The Salvation Army has been in Cohoes providing assistance to people in need since 1884, and thanks to invitations from two local churches, it will continue to operate a food pantry and soup kitchen after it completes plans to reduce costs by selling its building at 300 Ontario Street.
"The food pantry will remain at its current location until the building sells, and then will move to one of the buildings owned by the United Church of Cohoes," said Major Lydia Pearson, director of the Army's Albany Area Services. "The pastor, Nick TeBordo, has graciously offered to provide space for the food pantry."
The soup kitchen, which is open the last week of every month, will close temporarily as of Sept. 30, 2009, she said, and reopen in January as part of Albany's mobile canteen ministry -- before moving to Vineyard Community Church, located at 121 Remsen Street, which is being renovated.
"Pastor Rick Colquhoun has invited us to house the soup kitchen in the new facility," Major Pearson said. "But until the space is ready, we will be serving meals out of our Emergency Disaster Services mobile canteen to individuals and families struggling with basic needs."
Once the food pantry and soup kitchen have relocated, Salvation Army personnel will continue to operate the programs.
"We're committed to our programs in Cohoes, and we're grateful to Pastor Nick TeBordo and Pastor Rick Colquhoun for allowing us to use space in their facilities," Major Pearson said. "This is an exciting collaboration that helps all of us in our missions to meet need wherever it exists."
