WHY I VOLUNTEER
by Judy Nestlen
Piano Teacher
I have always known that my place is to be a teacher. My career in education has encompassed many areas including public school, Sunday school and Bible classes and private instruction in reading, literacy and music. When I retired from private piano teaching, I found myself with extra time and sought an avenue in which I felt I might do some good. Through a friend, who serves on the Salvation Army's Advisory Board, I learned of a need for a piano teacher at the music school.
What a joy it has been to teach these young people to play an instrument. I was amazed at the number of children participating in this music program. Many of them would not have an opportunity for private instruction if it were not for this school and the dedicated and caring teachers.
It is rewarding to help these young people one-on-one and to interact with their families, which is made possible at our concerts. Although some of these parents may not have the same resources as others, they have the same expectations and standards of success for their children. What a special moment it is to see the joy and pride in a child's face when he or she masters a special piece of music. For me, there is nothing more rewarding than seeing that look as a result of my sharing the gifts God has given me. There is such a good feeling that comes from helping others and knowing you may have influenced their lives in a positive way. That's why I volunteer.
